Sleep is very important to both your mental and physical wellbeing. When it comes to buying a bed in Australia there are a number of different sizes you can purchase.

Ranging from mattresses designed for newborn babies, to oversized options for couples and young families, they cover the requirements of all types of sleeping situations.

In case you are in the market for a new mattress, we will take a look at all current Australian Bed Sizes in this guide to help you decide on the right one for you.

Australian Bed Sizes

Australia has a distinctive set of bed sizes that are not too dissimilar from what you will find in New Zealand, though a bit different from that of the UK or USA.

Broadly speaking there are 5 mattress sizes in Australia including the single and king single, as well as the double, queen and king size. You may also find there are variations in some mattress sizes that include in a ‘long’ single and a ‘super’ king size.

These mattresses and their sizes usually have the following dimensions:

Cot Mattress – 69 cm x 130 cm

Single Mattress – 92 cm x 188 cm

Long Single – 92 cm x 203 cm

King Single – 107 cm x 203 cm

Double Mattress – 138 cm x 188 cm

Queen Mattress – 153 cm x 203 cm

King Mattress – 183 cm x 203 cm

Super King – 203 cm x 203 cm

Overall, most of the bed bases on the market today will be a similar size to the mattress. Though some bases may be designed to be a little longer or wider. So, it is worth being mindful of this when deciding which one to buy for your bedroom space.

A brief overview of bed sizes

Cot Mattress

Designed for babies, a cot mattress is made to fit a standard baby cot. Although they sometimes can be bigger, most mattresses are manufactured to dimensions of 69 cm wide and 130 cm long, to fit in a standard baby cot.

There are many varieties of style and design on the market, with prices typically ranging from between $200 and $500 depending on what level of quality you buy.

Before buying a baby mattress, it is always worth measuring the cot to ensure the sizes are compatible.

Single Mattress

Usually measuring about 92cm wide and 188cm long, a single mattress generally has a small size. Though despite this it is actually quite versatile, easily sleeping a toddler, child or teenager.

Apparently some 3% of Australian adults also sleep on a single mattress size every evening too – possibly to save on bedroom space, or money.

Single size mattresses tend to vary in price from between $400 and $750 depending on the brand.

Long Single Mattress

The long single mattress is about 15cm longer and the same width as a single mattress, which makes it ideal for taller teenagers or adults.

Whilst it is not as popular a size for Australian bedrooms, there are quite a few options available for purchase.

Often two long single mattresses are placed together, especially in hotels to create a king size mattress, often on a bed base that is adjustable.

Usually for a good quality, long single mattress you can expect to pay between $500 – $1000.

King Single Mattress

Offering the same length as a long single mattress but standing about 15cm wider is a king single mattress.

Perfect for taller children, teenagers and adults, (apparently another 3% of Aussie adults sleep on one of them every night) they are also a common option for FiFo workers in mine sites.

Typically, the price for a good quality king single size mattress will set you back between $500 – $1000.

Double Mattress

Some one in ten Australians sleep on a double mattress, making it one of the more common Australian Bed Sizes.

Measuring about 138 cm wide and 188 cm long, it is a very practical and versatile mattress that can easily accommodate two adults. It is also good for people who sleep in diagonal or more expansive positions.

Commonly, a good double size mattress falls within the $700 to $1500 price range. You can often pick them up cheaper than that, but the quality of the mattress, and the sleep you will get on it is questionable.

Queen Mattress

Queen size mattresses are by far the most common of all Australian Bed Sizes, with a whopping 61% of the country sleeping on a version of them.

Measuring out at 153 cm wide and 203 cm long, they can easily fit two adults and often a smaller child as well. Which is perfect for when your little one wants to join you in the wee hours of the morning.

Prices for them can range markedly from around $800 to several thousand pounds, and you definitely get what you pay for.

Again, you might be able to buy them cheaper, but you will be compromising on quality.

King Mattress

At 183 cm wide and 203 cm long, king size mattresses offer space and comfort. This is a great choice for those who tend to sleep at all angles, but still want to remain with their partner through the night.

Utilised by some 21% of Australians, these beds are traditionally found in deluxe hotels, but also increasingly now in Australian homes.

Prices tend to start from about $1000 and run into the many thousands.

Super King Mattress

As the name suggests the super king mattress is so big you can sleep on it horizontally if you wish!

At 203 cm wide and 203 cm long, you will need a big bedroom to put it in, though it will comfortably fit a couple, as well as the odd child or two. Which makes it a lovely option to sit in whilst watching a Netflix family movie.

Only about 1% of Australians use a super king mattress, but those that do often pay from $1500 up to several thousands of dollars for the pleasure of doing so.
