The History of “Manchester”

Tuesday, May 1, 2012 1:17:11 AM Australia/Sydney

If you've ever shopped for bed-linen or table cloths while travelling outside of Australia, you may have been met by a confused look from the shop assistant when you asked for the “Manchester Department”. Manchester is a word that is used commonly throughout Australia to describe bedding, sheets, towels, pillowslips, table linen and similar items, yet this is not the case elsewhere.

In fact, the use of the word Manchester is one that is unique to Australia and the reasons why quite curious. During the 18th and 19th centuries, settlers in Australia were unable to grow cotton crops successfully, while plantations and cotton mills had yet to be developed. This meant Australians needed to import bedding and other cotton goods from overseas.

How to Use Visualisation Techniques for Better Sleep

Tuesday, April 10, 2012 12:46:00 AM Australia/Sydney

While some people use the meditation technique of clearing their minds to help them get to sleep at night, many people find that the method has its downfalls. The most common problem that people face is what is often referred to as “monkey-mind” - that is to say, the chatter that your mind comes up with, instead of resting. One minute, you'll be relaxed and drifting off to sleep, and the next, you realise that your mind has drifted onto making a to-do list for the busy day you have tomorrow, or you are tensing up thinking of the clever things you could have said when a shop assistant was rude to you two weeks earlier...

The experience of lying in bed, with your mind working overtime, is one that most of us experience at one time or another. Happily, there are a number of visualisation tech...

Snoring and How to Cure It

Monday, March 26, 2012 4:30:15 PM Australia/Sydney

In our last blog, we talked about the causes and health effects of that annoying nightly habit...snoring. This week, we look at the different methods used to cure snoring, and how they can help you.

Sleep on Your Side

As we mentioned in our causes of snoring blog, sleep position can cause snoring. Laying on your back is the worst culprit, so if you, or your partner, experience snoring – make the position you sleep in the first thing you change.

Drink More...Water

Being well hydrated has a whole host of benefits to your health, as all your organs function better. Drinking more water will keep your salivary glands, nasal passages, mouth and throat moist, and prevent the dryness which can cause snoring.

Drink Less...Booze

Sorry to have to say it, but if your snoring usually occurs after drink...

What Do Your Dreams Mean?

Tuesday, March 13, 2012 7:13:00 PM Australia/Sydney

Our dreams have been a source of mystery and fascination for almost as long as the human race itself. The ancient Greeks, Chinese and Egyptians were amongst the first groups of people to understand that the symbols seen in dreams could have significance in daily life. Each developed their own methods of dream interpretation and people would allow themselves to be guided by messages gathered from dreams. Later, psychoanalysts, notably Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, came up with their own ground=breaking theories of dream interpretation, which are still referred to today.

Today, go into any library or bookshop and you are sure to find a book giving descriptions of what a symbol in your dream might mean. While these books are interesting, it is important to note that a symbol which has a part...

Bedding of the Future

Friday, January 27, 2012 2:07:15 PM Australia/Sydney

Have you ever imagined what the beds and bedding we sleep on in the future might be like? We have...and here are some of the suggestions we'd like to see being developed by bedding manufacturers!

Beautifying Bedding

Wouldn't it be amazing to be able to go to sleep and wake up looking like you've just spent a week in a pricey health spa? We are not quite sure how this one would work but we'd love to see a set of sheets and pillow cases which moisturised and toned the skin while you rested. The designers could even come up with an option which would allow you to wake up with a flawless natural sun-tan!

The Self Cleaning Bed

If you do your own laundry and bed-making, you'll appreciate what a great time-saver a self cleaning bed would be. Scientific research into nano technology makes this id...
